Frequently Asked

Everything we’re asked.

The full list — process, photos, styles, products, shipping, returns, and the parts behind the scenes. If something here isn’t covered, our team replies within an hour.

The Studio

Who is making this.

A family of artists, one of us at it for seventy years, and the reason we build this way.

  • We are a family of artists, passionate about the act of creation. Some of us have been creating for seventy years, long before any of this technology existed.

We are also passionate about our own animals, who just so happen to be the light of our lives and our best friends. We built this as a space to share our love for art, life, and the spaces in between.

  • Because times change, and we decided to embrace them rather than pretend otherwise. The speed of creating art has accelerated: ideas become reality in days or weeks rather than months or years, and that is genuinely fun to work with.

The honest reason this site exists is that nearly all of the AI art we see doesn’t inspire us. We became fascinated by the idea that we could build something better—more inspiring, more beautiful. And if we are successful, the oil paintings we create in our studio can hang in our own homes and don’t need to be advertised to support our family.

The Process

From your photo to the final piece.

What actually happens between you uploading a photo and receiving artwork in the mail.

  • That is the one rule every room shares. Painted Holidays keeps the faces, the coat or the façade exactly as photographed and repaints everything else—the light, the season, the setting, the clothes—into the holiday you chose. A judge scores each painting for likeness before you see it; anything under our bar is painted again free.

Three come back from the same photograph, each from a different engine, so you are choosing between interpretations rather than three near-identical images.

  • Yes, here and only here. Every other site we run declines a photograph with a child in it. On Painted Holidays you can upload one if you are signed in and you tick the box under the upload that says you own the photograph and you are the parent or legal guardian of every child in it. Without both, the upload is declined before it is stored.

Then the walls: the Dark Side of Halloween is closed to any photo with a child in it, the engine is told the child’s age is not to change, every painting with a child is checked twice before it is shown to you, and a person looks at it once more before anything is printed. That last check can add a day to a print order.

  • It has two shelves. The Cute Side is storybook October—the porch portrait, the costume parade, the witch’s cottage, the carved pumpkin patch. The Dark Side is atmosphere: a 1930s monster-movie lobby card, a Victorian tintype, a gaslamp in the fog, a Sleepy Hollow nocturne. Neither shelf has gore, blood or weapons; that ceiling is written into the engine, not just the description.

  • You see the finished portrait before you pay anything. No account, no card on file, no surprise charge — just three rendered variations, watermarked, waiting for your approval.

If none of them feel right, retry with a different style or upload a different photo, free. You only pay when you find one you actually want to keep — and the preview you approve is the artwork we deliver.

  • No. You can preview watermarked portraits free before you buy. Choose the version you love, then order it as a digital keepsake, archival print, gallery canvas, or framed heirloom.

No account, no card on file, no surprise charge. You only pay when you find a portrait you actually want to keep — and the preview you approve is the artwork we deliver.

  • From upload to a finished, watermarked preview is typically about a minute. We render three variations in parallel from three different AI engines, each with its own painterly bias, so you’re comparing different interpretations rather than three near-identical images.

Physical orders ship from our print partners after you check out — fine-art prints and canvas usually leave the press in 2–3 business days, apparel and accessories in 3–5. Shipping time on top of that depends on where in the world you are.

  • No. Upload a photo and you can browse styles, generate previews, and see exactly what your portrait looks like — all without signing up. An account becomes useful when you want to keep a permanent gallery of your portraits, re-order from older sessions, or have purchase history on hand. You can sign up at any point, including after checkout.

  • Every visit, you get 5 free passes — and each pass renders 3 portraits at once, so that’s 15 free previews to explore different styles before you spend anything. Pick the one you love, or buy several if more than one gets it right.

Want to keep exploring? Add 10 more passes for $10 — and the full $10 is credited toward any portrait you purchase, so it’s really a deposit, not an extra fee. Passes bank to your account, so create a quick (free) account and they’re waiting for you next time.

And whenever you make a purchase while signed in, we add 15 more passes to your account on the house — plenty of room to design gifts for the rest of the family.

A quick note in the spirit of honesty: passes are a generous-but-finite allowance, not unlimited renders. We’d rather price it fairly and keep the quality high than promise endless free generations.

Your Photos

What to upload — and why it matters.

The photo you start with is the single biggest factor in how the portrait turns out. Here’s how to give us a good one.

  • Everyone in one frame, front-on, well lit. Phone photos are fine. The painting renders exactly the people and animals in the photograph, no more and no fewer, so for a big family gathering get every face clearly visible—the cousin half behind the grandfather will come out half behind the grandfather.

  • Your original upload sits in private, encrypted storage on our infrastructure and is only ever used to generate the portraits you asked for. We don’t sell, train on, or share your photos. See our privacy policy for the formal version.

Styles & Output

The art side of things.

Styles, variations, and what you can do with the artwork once it’s yours.

  • 120 curated styles, organised into 4 collections — Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and more. Some are faithful homages to art movements; others push further than a homage would.

  • Different image models have different sensibilities — one tends toward bolder composition and richer color, another toward fine textural detail, another toward dramatic lighting. We run all three on the same photo and the same style so you can choose the interpretation that looks most like the one you had in your head.

If you want a fourth pass with our newest, most refined engine — the one that excels at holding the smallest details, the ones you notice only on a second look — that’s available as a Heirloom Painting after you’ve seen your first three.

  • The Heirloom Painting is an extra rendering with our newest, deepest-fidelity AI engine. It takes about three minutes — versus the minute or so for the free three — and produces a more refined, more faithful portrait. Once you’ve approved one of the free three, you can unlock the Heirloom for $1.

The $1 covers the render itself (you’ll see a watermarked preview) and immediately upgrades every physical product on that session — canvas, fine-art prints, apparel, accessories — to use the Heirloom image. To download the unwatermarked high-resolution digital file as well, the download is a separate $25 unlock.

  • Not yet through the self-serve flow. The styles in the catalog are tuned to give consistent, beautiful results without prompt-engineering on your part. If you have a specific commission in mind that isn’t covered, write us via the contact page and we’ll see what we can do.

  • After purchase, yes — for personal use. Print it, hang it, gift it, post it, put it on your Christmas card, give it to your grandma. Commercial resale (selling prints of the same image as your own product) isn’t licensed by default; reach out if you want a commercial license and we’ll sort one.

Products & Shipping

Where the portrait lives next.

Prints, canvas, apparel, accessories, and how they make it to your door.

    • Wall art: giclée fine-art prints, Hahnemühle museum-grade prints, gallery-wrapped stretched canvas, float-framed canvas.
    • Apparel: all-over-print tees, sweatshirts and hoodies (the portrait covers the whole garment), or classic front-print tees, sweatshirts and hoodies.
    • Accessories: phone cases cut for specific iPhone and Samsung models, ceramic mugs, fleece blankets, throw pillows, jigsaw puzzles, totes, art socks.
    • Digital: a high-resolution download, or the full pack with every variation upscaled to 4K and print-ready.
  • Wall art is produced by archival print partners using pigment inks on cotton-rag papers and stretched canvas. The Hahnemühle option is the same paper used in museum and gallery editions — 308gsm, smooth surface, neutral white, designed to last over a century without fading.

Apparel is produced by sublimation (for all-over-print) or DTG printing (for front-chest designs), depending on the product. Phone cases use UV-cured glossy print on a tough snap-on shell.

  • Worldwide. Shipping rates are calculated at checkout based on where you’re shipping to and what you’re ordering. Wall art ships from regional print partners (US, UK, EU, AU) rather than crossing oceans, so most orders arrive faster and at lower carbon cost than a single-origin operation.

  • Domestic deliveries (you’re in the same region as the print partner) typically arrive within 4–7 business days from order. International deliveries 7–14. Larger canvas pieces sometimes sit an extra day in production. You’ll get a tracking link by email the moment your order leaves the press.

Accounts & Privacy

Signing in, signing up, signing out.

Account flows, data handling, and how older work gets attached to your profile.

  • No. Anything you generated in the same browser before creating an account is automatically linked to your account when you sign up or sign in — provided you’re on the same device. If you started in a different browser or on a different device, write us and we’ll help reunite you with them.

  • Yes. Both Google and Apple sign-in are supported, alongside email and password. If you choose Apple’s “Hide My Email” option, the relay address still receives all your order updates as normal — Apple forwards them.

  • Yes. Every portrait you’ve approved sits in your account. From there you can pull it back into the product picker and order it on anything we sell — without re-generating, without losing the variation you originally chose.

Support, Returns & Care

If anything goes sideways.

What to do when something arrives wrong, plus a few of the questions we get most often.

  • Digital downloads are yours the moment your order is paid. Printed and made-to-order goods ship tracked from our print partners. If you are close to the day, the digital file is the safe order and the print can follow it.

  • Get in touch via the contact page or reply to your order confirmation email. If a print arrives damaged in shipping, the wrong size, or doesn’t match the preview, we replace it. Apparel sizing exchanges are handled case-by-case; the size charts in product detail are accurate, so it helps to check those before ordering.

  • The portraits are generated by AI image models, with prompts and stylistic conditioning designed by a small in-house team of artists and engineers. Nothing about that is hidden: we say so up top, in our process, and in our pricing.

What that means for you: faster turnaround and a much wider range of styles than a single commissioned painter could offer at the same price. What it means for us: the work behind the scenes is curating styles, dialing in the prompts that preserve identity, training the team on quality control, and partnering with traditional craftspeople (the print and canvas shops, the framers) who finish the physical product by hand.
